Parking Garage Gate Changes Coming July 25


In our recent parking notices, we did not communicate that there would be a new process when entering and exiting our parking garages at night and on weekends, and we apologize for the confusion and frustration this has caused.

Now through Sunday, July 24, all parking gates will return to being raised at 7 p.m. on weekdays and staying open on weekends. During this timeframe, Park Durham will work to communicate our parking changes to the community and ensure gates are working properly. 

Starting Monday, July 25, the gates will be lowered 24/7 at all City parking garages and a new payment process will be in effect as described below.

Refunds Available

Any customers who experienced faulty equipment or were overcharged since July 1 should contact Park Durham at or by calling 919-560-4157 to request a refund.

Parking Garage Gate Changes Effective July 25

In keeping with industry best practices, starting Monday, July 25 all customers entering a gated parking garage or lot—no matter what day or time—will be required to pull a ticket and keep that ticket to present when exiting the facility. Once the ticket is presented, the gate will open to allow the vehicle to exit.

Customers will only be charged for times when parking rates are in effect, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday. Parking remains free weekdays after 7 p.m. and on weekends and holidays.

Below are several example payment scenarios:

  • If you park on a weekday at 6 p.m. and exit at 11 p.m. the same day, your balance due will be $2.25 for the one hour from 6-7 p.m. 
  • If you park after 7 p.m. and exit at 11:30 p.m., your balance due upon exiting will be $0.00 and the gate will open once the ticket is presented. 
  • Parking on weekends and holidays continues to be free, however you will need to pull a ticket and present it when exiting the garage.
  • On holidays that fall on a Monday, parking charges start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. 

Pay at kiosks before exiting to avoid delays:
To reduce delays when exiting, we encourage you to pay at the “pay-on-foot” machines located near the parking deck elevators. Once paid, the ticket can be presented at the exit and the gate will open immediately, enabling a quick departure and reducing wait times for others in line.
